➤ Where We Are


You will find us on the first floor of the Psychological Laboratory on the Downing Site. Visitors should introduce themselves at Reception.

Department of Psychology staff, graduate students, and third-year undergraduate students have 24-hour swipe card access to the Library.

Psychology Undergraduates 10 books   for 7 days

Books marked Special Reference Overnight and weekend loans to be returned by 10 AM NO Renewals (exceptional cases, send an email)

Please ensure that you add all books to your account by using the self-issue machine.

To return books simply deposit them in the drop-box at the issue desk.

➤ Facilities

The computer suite has 8 computers and a black and white printer. Collect your login and password from the Computer Room (105, surgery held daily 2-2.30 pm) the first time you use these.  You need credit on your DS-Print account in order to print.
The Psych Sanctuary (student common room) is right next door to the library, equipped with vending machines for snacks and drinks, a fridge, kettle and microwave. Seating includes café style tables, easy chairs and bean bags.
We have a self-service binding facility which costs £1.00 per item. Please ask at the Library Office.

➤ Electronic Legal Deposit (eLD)

The Computer Room by the library in the main psychology building has ONE terminal/computer for access to the Electronic Legal Deposit. This prints* from PSY-FindMe DS-printer (room 111) using your Cam-Card and DS credits.


➤ How To Find Books 

Browsing the shelves for books? Click here to know how we classify and organise the books, and feel free to come and access our collection. 
If you already know which book you want, you can find on IDiscover (the university catalogue) if Psychology Library has it. Make a note of the classmark and check if there is any extra information about the book.
  • If the book is available, you can pick up from the shelve. 
  • If the book is special Reference, you have to ask the Librarian. 
  • If the book is Store item (see below), you have to ask the Librarian. 
  • Classmarks starting with a number? You will find shelved in the MacCurdy Library collection.
  • Classmarks starting with a letter? You will find shelved in the Main Library collection. 
  • Large volumes are shelved on the bottom shelves on the right-hand side as you enter the Main library.
  • You need to ask the Librarian for Special Reference or Store items.

➤ Rare books/store books - Archive

Books to be consulted must be requested at least 24 hours in advance by emailing the Librarian. Please include the book title, author and classmark. Alternatively, you can pop into the Library to request item(s).
These books are Reference Only and can only be used in the Main Library or MacCurdy Library.
You must bring your University card and collect the books from the Librarian during staffed hours 9-1pm and 2-5pm, 2-4pm on Fridays.
You must take care when using the books as many of them are fragile.  Do not mark the book in any way.
Please hand the books back to the Librarian (9-1pm and 2-5pm, 2-4pm on Fridays) when you have finished with them.

➤ Library rules

  • All books borrowed must be issued using the self-issue machine, or the borrowing register slip, or at the Library desk.
  • Books must not be marked.
  • Food is not permitted in the library.
  • Belongings should not be left unattended.

If the fire alarm sounds please exit immediately. The fire assembly point is outside the Geography Department.

➤ Print Journals

Journals are kept in five different locations: MacCurdy Library, Main Library, Library Office, Computer Room and the Archive Store. You can find it on IDiscover (the University catalogue).
